Forbes Family Return to Tryst

A brilliant moment for the club as Club Captain Nicky Rodgers, Club President Tom Dickson and John MacNeil met the daughter of Club Legend Forbes Jones, who played for Stenhousemuir during the period 1929-1931.

Rosemary, known as Romey, McPherson (nee Jones) visited the Club on Friday June 6th while visiting from USA where she now lives. Romey passed into our keeping her father’s ‘Scotland sweater for Teas’ that he received on his Scotland debut in 1930 against Australia. She also gave us a photo of the two teams from a 1936 match against Ireland, which was the only occasion that his cousin, Jimmy Jones, and he both played in the same Scotland side. Both Forbes and Jimmy, who were born just five months apart, played for Stenhousemuir 1st XI from 1929-1931. Forbes returned to play for us again after the Second World War, but sadly Jimmy died in service to his country in 1943.

From 1932 to 1939 both cousins played for Stirling County in the Scottish County Championships. Stenhousemuir, at that time, played (and dominated) the Falkirk District League. The Scottish County Championships was the highest level of domestic cricket in Scotland until the 1950s.

Forbes’ and Jimmy’s fathers (Peter Forbes Jones and Tom Bruce Jones) were each long standing Presidents of the Club, covering the period 1901 to 1932 (over a fifth of the Club's history) and both were players from the early 1890s.
